But you should note that the questions it asked still remain unanswered even today. While yourself and Norman Smith are happy to assume that the investigation took place and found nothing, and the Deputy Prime Minister is happy to tell outright lies by saying that everyone looked on Cyril Smith as a friend the seven people who made allegations to the Police and gave statements to that effect (not a very easy or pleasant thing to do) still have no answers to what are very reasonable questions such as what were the conclusions/recommendations of the police investigation, was the file passed to the DPP and if so why they decided not to prosecute?

This is the least those people deserve and I'm afraid unsupported statements by Norman Smith and yourself regarding what the investigation concluded just do not cut it. Conservatives quite rightly talk about defending victim's rights perhaps you should do the same rather than attacking those who stand up for them.tory boys never grow upnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38067964.post-24361936525861829702010-09-23T07:39:09.466+01:002010-09-23T07:39:09.466+01:00Is Benchill Tory actually a thinly disguised Liber...Is Benchill Tory actually a thinly disguised Liberal Democrat advocate? A long running party piece of John Leech's personal dirty tricks brigade? This post from the estimable Mr Paul is in fact almost entirely composed of the historic words of Rochdale Alternative Paper, which upstanding organ BHT praises. How then does this ever mysterious commenter turn that round to an unfounded and bizarre accusation of being like News of the World?Semi-Retired Postman Patelhttp://postmanpatel.blogspot.com/2008/04/jersey-child-abuse-more-allegations.htmlnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38067964.post-71398074334341294142010-09-23T07:17:03.660+01:002010-09-23T07:17:03.660+01:00Yes BHT, yes. RAP pointed out that justice did not...Yes BHT, yes. RAP pointed out that justice did not appear to have been done, suggested that or even reported that strings had been pulled to prevent this and protect a larger-than-life but in some ways small element in the poliytical elite, and suggested that there should be a full and impartial investigation.

We have produced their words verbatim and we don't disagree. Overall we feel they were a bit kind to the man in a slightly ironic kind of 1970s investigative journalism under close instructions from solicitors kind of way.

A few years later at City Life we would be doing a similar job on stories about local business elites in the City of Manchester. I recognise the use of language.

Justice has not been seen to be done has it? It still looks very much as if the thoroughly investigated police file with seven or eight distinct witnesses was stopped in its tracks. There has certainly been no impartial investigation.

Not of this and not of other extraordinary allegations and implications that we may well come on to in the fullness of time.

Cyril's greatest achievement probably was founding a school. That turned out to be a next of co-abuse, stranger-abuse, staff-abuse and child-prostitution. There's a story to be told there don't you think? Knowl View.

The Independent did run this round the block a couple of times. But they were coy. We have more.

Next to this there was the founding of the Rochdale Childer charity. This too has been controversial with personnel close to the heart of it we understand to have been subject of criminal proceedings.

And so on and so forth.

Comparison with the News of the World is of course utterly ridiculous and shows what a banana you really are "BHT".Chris Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15679067503215414300noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38067964.post-67613367260488901832010-09-22T22:51:42.659+01:002010-09-22T22:51:42.659+01:00these extracts from the RAP are interesting. There ...these extracts from the RAP are interesting. There conclusions seem very reasoned.
"It is not RAP’s function to pronounce on guilt or innocence. We do however believe that the investigation of 1970 should have resulted in a court case. We cannot but believe, like many of the men we interviewed, that had the allegations involved a less prominent person, it would have had exactly that result."
"We accept that Smith may neither have committed or, even if the evidence gathered by the police investigation had led to prosecution, been found guilty of any criminal offence. But the practices described in the statements made to both the police and RAP must be condemned, not for any sexual content which may be read into them, but because they present a serious abuse of authority.
Private preferences are, and should remain, personal business. The use of public position for personal gratification at the cost of exploitation of others must be prevented.

There is also cause for concern in the question of whether the file in this case reached the D.P.P.’s office. RAP believes that this should be the subject of a full and impartial investigation."

A reminder of the times when those on the left were highly principled and insightful in their analysis.
Such a refreshing change from the tribal reactionary left we have today!
Labour of love? No allegations were dropped. Cyril's friends in high places saw the matter covered up, and not just once. Those who complained and in at least one case that man's next generation of victims saw no justice. People at large not getting justice and protection while friends and family were protected at any cost is a feature of the Smith career.
Chris Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15679067503215414300noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-38067964.post-13373309134235160092010-09-21T00:25:19.581+01:002010-09-21T00:25:19.581+01:00Is there ANY indication in the RAP article or the ...Is there ANY indication in the RAP article or the statements that the Doctor was present when Cyril got his victims to cough? In the reverse Cyril had frequently been a Rochdale observer when the doctor had examined residents in the same way.

Cyril had learned the trade at the elbow of the good Doctor but skipped the 10 years of GP training. Would Cyril have made a good Doctor? Nope. Or MP? Nope.

It is very unclear to this citizen what the bollocks gripping cough demanding procedure ever did for mankind although it was a staple of for example the military check up routine back in the day.

Not sure really how let's call it "bollock cough reflex" was an important qualification for either service in the armed forces or for residence in Cambridge House.

But I don't think yon Doctor "allowed" Cyril to do this.
