Manchester Withington Selection: Thursday Work

In alphabetical order:
Burnage BLP - (a) Councillor Nargis Khan (b) Jenny Lennox;
Didsbury East BLP - (a) Dr Yogesh Virmani (b) Lucy Powell;
Didsbury West BLP - (a) Naheed Arshad-Mather MBE (b) Lucy Powell.

Running totals: Lucy (4), Naheed (3), Nargis (3), Jenny (2), Yogesh (2). Trade Union and affiliates section to follow. These also can make two nominations. However their first nomination is open, but if they make a second at least one must be a Black and Minority Ethnic candidate.

Thanks Chris, and thanks to those bringing in the news. Does this mean all of the above are on the ballot / hustings?

If all 30 nominations which I understand are available are used (14 cast so far, 16 to go) and some go to other candidates than these five it is certainly arithmetically possible that those on two nominations could be superceded in the top six.

Very unlikely for those on three nominations. And it is now arithmetically impossible by my calculations that Lucy on four will not be in the top six. There would have to be 20 nominations left and it would be hugely unlikely.

Six is the maximum final shortlist with just three BME candidates nominated. This max increases to eight if Casra Khan is nominated.

Amicustheunion, with three x two nominations, have a full time official who is not yet in the above list, though there are loyalties in other directions also.

It is still well worth using the supporters' endorsements section for the other four candidates, or indeed for those who are already off the mark.

Even a single nomination could achieve the next stage. And that is arithmetically possible even on a shortlist of six.

Chris
May I crave your indulgence to allow me to put a public service announcement on this blog.
Tomorrow - Saturday February 17 - supporters of Labour rebel John McDonnell will be campaigning in Manchester city centre to raise John's profile.
Meet outside Tesco on Market Street at noon.
Thank you

I dont understand this obsession with local or not. How many people living in Withington are actually real locals any way. Best woman for the job is what I say!

Here is the news from Chorlton:

SUPER-SUNDAY event: Sunday 18 Feb 11am MEETING AT BOWLING GREEN PUB, BROOKBURN ROAD. FURTHER INFO CONTACT VAL STEVENS ON 07710420607

Although Chorlton have already nominated there is a concentration of Co-op Party members and members of various TUs who are expected to attend this. Candidates from all parts of the British Isles who are willing to relocate into our area, remain in our area or return to our area to fight the Liberal Democrats if selected are ALL very welcome.

I am going to leave the original plug for the John4Leader event in Manchester and remove all the hilarious wit and repartee about really being local etc etc. "Local" is an almost meaningless term and it is the Lib Dems who fetishise it. STOP!!

Mark Twain said: "The wonderful thing about science is the huge return of speculation one gets for a small investment of fact."

I say: "The wonderful thing about blogging a selection process is the huge amount of advice one gets from the strangest quarters on how to control and censor it."

Please be self policing. And on the very last bit of advice received I say this. If X draws attention to themselves by excessive attempts at manipulation of this selection they will clearly not be immune from comment about that.

Final point on the cull I have just made, which was a tedious thing to have to do. It is rather likely that there will be posts on this blog concerning John McDonnell, Michael Meacher, Gordon Brown, David Miliband and any other hopefool who puts up for party leader. Ditto the deputy candidates. Please blog about that separately when the occasion arises if you wish to comment on my biting analysis or answer the incisive questions I raise.

The nine potential candidates we have run the full gamut of LP views. As a respectful and democratic party we wouldn't want to be shouting down their supporters who may or may not be Blair ultras, Brownies or indeed Campaign groupees.

United we stand.

Dear all,
Sorry Ive not made it to the event in Chorlton, but I only saw the advertisement on the blog 5 min ago, a bit late for 11am but it is only a few minutes from Cheadle.
:-)

I just thought people might like to be aware that John Leech is tabled in Future Business for
Tue 27th Feb: Speed Limits (Amemndment), 'That leave be given to bring in a Bill to make provision for the reduction of the default speed limit in lit urban areas from 30 m.p.h. to 20 m.p.h. and for connected purposes.

More importantly:
Future business regarding workers;
People may also be interested in following the following private members bills;

Fri 2nd March;
2. Temporary and Agengcy workers (prevention of less favourable treatment)Bill.

This Bill will clearly be of great benefit to CWU colleagues, as well as other Unions, not least in my own field teaching (supply teachers being more and more in demand these days). It is a shame that the rights of temp. and agency workers are so lately addressed. It is also worth acknowledging the difficulties of pursuing a private members bill to success. In this issue ****Please**** spread the word and get labour colleagues and friends from other regions to lobby their MP's in order to get the required 100 on March 2nd to see this Bill go further.

3. John McDonnell is timetable to have the second reading of the Trade Union Rights and Freedoms Bill on the same date.

There are many other bills of interest following these but there is generally only time for the 1st 7 to gain debate.

This is why it would be of great value for people to apply pressure to MP's regarding the Temp workers bill as this is 8TH on the list.
I am sure, people will agree this is a crucial issue regarding employee's rights.

Have a good week everyone.

Thanks Lorenzo. Can you please confirm the time of the kick off for this meeting? And do all co-op party members in the area have the right to attend and vote or only those who are resident in the constituency?

Big thanks to the 21 who assisted with Chorlton Labour Rose this morning. I have seven rounds at home if anyone is itching to do more. Particular mention to candidates Lucy, Jenny and Casra for attending. And to Nargis who has reserved a substantial round.
