Eric Hobin: Councillor for Charlestown

Councillor Eric Hobin (Manchester, Charlestown) died 29 March 2007

An Elected Member of Manchester City Council for more than a decade, serving most recently on Community Regeneration and Licencing and Appeals Committees, Eric Hobin was also on the Board of Northwards Housing, a respected member of the Higher Blackley and Charlestown Crime and Disorder Reduction Panel, and a good friend of both my own Athletic Club, Salford Harriers based at Boggart Hole Clough in his ward, and of The Whitemoss Club for Young People.

Rest in Peace.

Eric Hobin was an absolute star and was a superb advocate for Charlestown. He couldn't stand the petty political arguments in Manchester but was always proud of his Labour roots.

Along with the excellent Mary Murphy, he was one of the few Councillors in Manchester who was absolutely committed to his local residents all the time.

Always brightening up your day with an funny story, Eric's committment to the cause, the cause of his people will be sadly missed. You must post the funeral arrangements Chris.

Thanks Dave

A few years ago Salford Harriers lost a dearly loved Life President, the very dogged Geoff Doggett. He lived near the Clough and whenever he could he would patrol and be sure that all was well. Every week or two I'd get up there with my dogs, aside from training nights, and there was a pretty good chance of seeing Geoff.

He loved his running and his runners and running and runners reciprocated. For 50 years and more.

I remember standing by in Durham as he made sure the men of Charlestown, Moston and Salford got the just deserts for their muddy slog in the National Cross. We'd won the huge cup for the best team in depth and we would have it.

I'm wondering if the two of them met - they surely must have. They both had this deep commitment to their people, and to helping them get results to their full potential.

Geoff's send off at Blackley Crem saw the place filled to the rafters. I laughed out loud as his last carriage disappeared into the flames to the strains of the Chariots of Fire theme! Wry to the very end.
