UK-elections-2007: Mohammed Afzal Khan in Cheetham Hill Ward

Magnificent! Last years majority 99. This year 1769.

Afzal 2340

The rest nowhere. Someone select this man as a PPC.

I like Afzal.
I had a poster in my window and voted for him yesterday.
But - if we are serious about equality - all seats seeking new candidates should be all women shortlists until all Labour groups are 50-50.

Well Miles, this is all very well. But gender equality on a city wide basis is being held back by backwoods constituencies like Blackley where even fairly recent selections have almost all been men. Including incidentally the last two vacancies in Mr Leese's ward and the last vacancy in Mr Khan's ward too.

Personally I don't see why Central and Withington should be 100% women councillors to make up for your patch in Blackley ...

There certainly should be no further exceptions on AWS for constituencies that are way behind the wave ... like Blackley.

But with Labour so well ahead on representation in Manchester and nationally I wouldn't necessarily want to put representation on other matters than gender behind that.

And I wouldn't necesarily agree with you if you're saying we should pick only women PPCs where vacancies arise. But I would also agree that too many CLPs are getting away with avoiding AWS.
