SMS Blogging: Anywhere Blogs in Manchester

Nice idea. Though the website could hardly be more information poor. Will come back to this one later. But if you text MUS, UNI, COR or ROY to 07624 819 019 you will get a text back with thoughts about Manchester Museum, University of Manchester, Cornerhouse and Royal Exchange respectively. URB for Urbis and so on. Texts outward are at standard rate and inward they're free. Use a web to text service like CBFSMS and it is completely free.

To add to the memories, poems, thoughts at any of the 20 nodes send the tag followed by your space and a normal length message and this will become part of the content there. Or you can create a new node by using a one word tag of any length, followed by a space and your message. I've started one for CHORLTON. I'm guessing you can write on it by texting CHORLTON (possibly CHO), space, and your comment to the above number. You can also WAP over to http://www.ablogs.org/wap/?d=ABLOG44413072372 for more as it arrives, and also WAP links.

More anon.

Thanks very much for trying Anywhereblogs. Have you seen Free Manchester's Monsters, a creative project using the Anywhereblogs platform? myspace.com/freemanchestersmonsters

We are keeping the Anywhereblogs web site information poor as a deliberate choice at the moment for a couple of reasons, but the most important is that Anywhereblogs is an experiment with the relationship between mobile technology, social networks, creativity (we hope) and real physical places. For the time being we don't want to make use of the distance shrinking powers of the web by telling people from outside Manchester how to use the service. Invitation is analogue only - you need to be in Manchester and find a leaflet or bus stop poster about Anywhereblogs. People who visit Chorlton, for example, have something in common, if only that they've been in the physical place itself, which they don't share with people who have never been there. Can Anywhereblogs generate some value from that common relationship? We are working on a desktop as well as mobile interface for the system, but we need to tread carefully so as not to dilute the value of real places. Andrew (of Anywhereblogs)
