Comment is Free: Dr Rupa Huq Debuts on Grrrrl Power

Dr Rupa Huq has set some hares running with this Comment is Free piece on the position of women in politics in South Asia. Baroness Warsi seems to be lauded as an innovation though Baroness Pola Uddin was elevated virtually ten years ago in 1998.

Hi, thanks fir the link. I wasn't exactly lauding Warsi but acknowledging she is there. She does have some dodgy homophobic views but is now famous. Uddin too got the Lords as a consolation prize after not making the Commons. Often happens with the European Parliament too that...

Isn't is possible to argue that far from being liberators for the sisterhood Ms Bhutto and Ms Ghandi just entrenched paternalistic privilege.
They were their fathers' daughters - and they were just the next line of a political dynasty who happened to be women.
Keeping the seat warm for the chaps.

Letter in Guardian today suggests BB's niece, daughter of one of her terrorist brothers, should have been next in line.

I think the comparison with S Asian women's fortunes in S Asia versus the UK was way too much of a stretch Rupa but the hint that you are to get Ermine soon is very welcome indeed.

And don't think we didn't notice Konnie in Robin Hood ...
