Nick Clogg: Solve the Following Three Equations for N

n = 1, where n is the number of referees on sexual prowess

N = much less than 30, where N is the lifetime number of female partners

N = n, obviously it must do

What is the value of N, and n?

i wasn't going to bother commenting on this til i saw you try to explain it on iain dale's blog but it's total rubbish. why on earth would everyone he'd slept with need to be a referee?

Why, pray tell, must n = 1? Am I missing a trick?

Well people, the BBC recreation of the interview I refer to at Dale's had Clogg saying that only his wife could be the judge of his prowess. Which to my ears was like him saying she was his only lover. Then the much less than 30 bit which was like him saying go to hell to Morgan really.

Here's the version that the Telegraph carried of the wife as sole referee bit:

And he went on to respond to a series of increasingly personal questions from interviewer Piers Morgan, who asked whether he saw himself as "good in bed".

"I don't think I am particularly brilliant or particularly bad," said the Lib Dem leader.

"Since the only judge of that is my wife..."

HERE. Only one judge of his prowess. Less than 30. the only number that fits both is in fact 1.

I couldn't give a monkey's but I do find all the plaudits for openness quite ridiculous and the interpretation of his eventual "much less than 30" as being between 20 and 30 as very foolish.

He may not live it down for a while. He is far less competent than I had expected actually. Clumsy.

Anon 2: On the n =1 question. The two Ns do need to be the same. Every woman he has slept with would be a potential judge of prowess. If there is only one judge there is only one lover, surely? Not to say that's the real number. he is a Lib Dem. Not renowned for accurate arithmetic are they? That just seems to be the logic of his remarks taken together.
