The Tuesday Cyril: What the 1981 Motions Said

LOL provided the link before but here is the text of the 22 October 1981 motion put by St Cyril's Tory chum David now Baron Waddington:

That this House takes note of the two European Community Documents No. 5682/80 for a Council Directive amending for The fifth time Directive 76/769/EEC on the approximation of the laws, regulations and administrative provisions of the Member States relating to restrictions on the marketing and use of dangerous substances and preparations, and of European Community Document No. 9953/80 for a Council Directive on The protection of workers from the risks due to exposure to chemical, physical and biological agents at work (asbestos) and t he updated explanatory memorandum of 8th May 1981 and two memoranda dated 15th October 1981; and welcomes the Government's intention to seek agreement on a harmonised practicable and enforceable policy to minimise the risks to health from exposure to asbestos.

The amendment - put by Barry now Baron Jones MP of Flint - replaces some warm words from the government (and Cyril Smith, and the asbestos industry) to the government with a call for specific action:

That this House takes note of the two European Community Documents No. 5682/80 for a Council Directive amending for The fifth time Directive 76/769/EEC on the approximation of the laws, regulations and administrative provisions of the Member States relating to restrictions on the marketing and use of dangerous substances and preparations, and of European Community Document No. 9953/80 for a Council Directive on The protection of workers from the risks due to exposure to chemical, physical and biological agents at work (asbestos) and t he updated explanatory memorandum of 8th May 1981 and two memoranda dated 15th October 1981 but notes in particular that the provisions of the Directive are incompatible with the recommendations of the final report of the Health and Safety Commission's Advisory Committee on Asbestos which, inter alia, calls for 'a statutory ban on the import of raw crocidolite to prevent its reintroduction into the United Kingdom and that this should be extended to the import of products containing it providing the practical difficulties can be overcome', and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to enter into immediate discussions with other member countries with a view to the early revision of the terms of the Directive so as to bring them into line not only with the recommendations of the Advisory Committee but also with the aim of seeking to eliminate the further use of asbestos in all its forms throughout the Community.

This specific action would (a) go further than that unreliable advocate Baron Waddington wished and have a statutory ban rather than warm words on keeping raw crocidolite out of the UK and (b) adopt the aim of "seeking to eliminate the further use of asbestos in all its forms throughout the Community".

So Cyril, there you are, whatever your marching orders were from Turner Brothers Asbestos, the owners of the largest asbestos charnel house in the world in your own constituency, the debate WAS supposed to be about a specific ban on one form of raw carcinogen and move towards an elimination of the damned stuff.

Perhaps Sir Cyril rather than Councillor Khan should stop talking about things of which they know very little? Or at least affect to know very little?

Great stuff.
This is the forst time inover 25 years that Cyril Smith is being called to account.
Since RAP closed Cyril though he was home and dry.
Keep up the good work. Rochdale deserves much better than tugging their forlocks to an arrogant, vindictive, manipulative and corrupt fool that did the bidding for the manufacturers of such a deadly product.

If properly tested, Cyril Smith would have to eat his words so often he would shit dictionaries.

As for the racist slurs. That is more "our Kid" Norman Smith's forte. That intellectual giant would make the KKK blush.

Cyril was much cleverer than that. Bankrolled by T&N and with great insight, he saw the new asian incomers as a block vote.
Norman was used to keep the aboriginal natives on side with the odd quip about 'p*kis'.

Dave Shenanighan is not averse to whipping up racial division as is Paul Rowen.

The White Knights of Asbestos (Rochdale T&N Chapter) all hail to Cyril the Grand Wizard who conducts magic. Creating cash and votes out of thin air.

What is amazing is that the so-called jounalists at the Rochdale Observer couldn't even check the basic facts and see that Cyril was lying through his teeth. Are the grounds for referring the Rochdale Observer to the Press Complaints Commission??

The Observer haven't explained why that tricky Dicky scientist chap - with far more published on graphite than asbo - left Turners around the time of the Alice documentary either.

Can someone bob round and ask him for me?

Who the hell does Cyril Smith think he is?

So Godfather of Rochdale politics Cyril Smith doesn't talk to the "likes" of Cllr Khan? What? A UK citizen (of the Realm he is a knight of), an elected member of the town he once represented in Parliament? A son of a former employee of the company he had shares in and spoke for in Parliament about a product that has killed so many people? Members of the party he was once a member of? Sons of his former helpers? Young Rochdale Asians that are British by birth? Someone that knows more about the 1981 debate in Parliament that Cyril told Rochdale Observer readers he had been working hard on when in fact all the work and information had been spoonfed to the ignorant, arrogant, vain fat fool? Someone who hasn't been accused of abusing vulnerable young men in hostels?

If Cyril is so particular about who he doesn't speak to then he will end up only speaking to himself.

Even that young David Hennagan must be drowing his sorrows with the mess that Cyril is creating for himself. The more Cyril pontificates, threatens and bullies thought the pages of the local newspaper the more that people will find out about the real Cyril.

The Rochdale Observer are doing a grand job. Local people smell a rat. Even though Cyril has had star billing, preferential treatment and media protection, the silence is deafening from ordinary local people who should really be showing more respect for Cyril's selfless apparent protection in the 1980's of cancer causing jobs that the peasants knew the risk of and if they didn't like they could have left.

Just read Rochdale Online latest exposee.
Cyril's correspondence with T&N prior to his (sic) 1981 speech on asbestos.
Oh Dear oh dear.
It WAS written for him. He even went to T&N to practice it (after reading it 10 times parrot fashion).
He also arranged front row seats in the public gallery for senior T&N directors and took them for dinner the evening before the debate.
Now that is what you call first class service. The poor bastards having to breathe in dust from this killer product never stood a chance.
This crooked shitbag should be stipped of his MBE and Knighthood.
