Iain Dale: Doughty Street's Goose is Cooked

Iain Dale is finished with 18 Doughty Street, having resigned to spend more time on better paying and grander duties. He is also launching a new "non-partisan" political journal. He says there has been no falling out:

I remain great friends with Stephan and Rosamund Shakespeare and for those who think that where there's smoke there must be fire, we're all having dinner in the next couple of weeks. I remain hugely grateful to Stephan for the opportunity he gave me.

Clearly, it's going to be a barbecue? Or baked 'taters in a bonfire of the vanities?

So the prima donna blogger is leaving and going "a poltico" after his failure to reach the first sift. I think he will still be there ( in a second sift ) as Dave cannot afford the formidable Widdy to be carping at him from her retirement cottage on Dartmoor.
The tory selection process is a fix despite its posturing of transparency. Watch out for boring Barwell to appear in the Maidstone sift.

Thanks Susan, a different Susan to my more usual visitor of that name I'd say from your insider Tory knowledge!

Don't know this Barwell of whom you speak. But I will find out.

The Barwell of whom Susan speaks is I suspect Gavin. The most proficient stuffer and underminer of those who don't agree with him ever to grace the unholy Portals of Conservative Central office. He is now the right hand man of or as some may say the bully and fixer extraordinairre of that famous Peer and huge Conservative donor Ashcroft. Barwell is also top of that discredited "A" List.

Thanks very much Croydon Watcher. Most useful elucidation and illumination. Is the spotty young Mr Hardyment in the same crew, or semi-detached working under cover for Taylor of Holbeach?

I can't answer that question with a great deal of knowledge but the
working under cover bit strikes me as very plausible.

Rock on Croydon Watcher. Barwell is the tory string puller on Croydon Council and menacing side kick of the Tory Leadership. Remember those events which led to the undermining of the incumbent Croydon Central Tory MP, Pelling for allegedly socking his wife.
It was a mystery as to who was co-ordinating the chorus activity for his resignation- which led to suspension. Pellings seat is a juicy safe job which all who are local, know one incumbent on Croydon Council would have liked. Lets say their is not a lot of luvvy duvvy for Barwell, from fellow councillors.
By the way Barwell has sat on loads of inquisitions, "kangaroo" meetings to decide the fate of loyal conservatives and has not, just a few enemies all around.

Iain has now commented elsewhere with a confident assertion that this sift has not yet taken place. So, either "Sebby" is a bit of a fibber, or La Widdy has caused an un-sift?

There were 2 comments (only one serious) on Conhome on November
30th about La Widdy's seat having done their sift and there being trouble with Conservative Central office. I wonder why Iain Dale did not make his assertion that the sift had not taken place then and there? Why wait to do it on this site a full 3 days later?

Very interesting! Well, you know, as these things go.

Chris Pauls Blog has flushed Barwell. Pelling was unsuspended today by the Tory Party. He has immediately said he will not seek re-election. He is unwell. The door is open for Barwell, the Tory Fixer, in Croydon Central, taking pressure off Maidstone for an unsift and a resift. Any guesses as to who will be in it after Widdy has gone beserk. It really is a miracle what the conservative party can do!

Chris Paul said...

I'm not sure I can take credit for these machinations "sebby", but hey ho, if you say so.

Croydon Advertiser article is very good. You can't take credit Chris! As has been stated already the unsavoury Barwell juggernaut would seem to have been rolling for some time. Watch him get the nomination and then lose the seat! I hope.

More interesting comments on Croydon Central/UK Polling. The Barwell Boys are out and about.

The baby faced tory thugs string pulling in Croydon is going to be a big story which will run and run, and I agree he has so many enemies in tory ranks that he will lose the seat if he is deviously selected. His "Kangaroo Courts" amongst tories is legend and his expenditure on them immoral.
The time has come for justice!
