National Union of Students: Election of President

Dave's Part has the nostalgic story.

Incumbent Labourite Gem is standing for another spin round the block as an independent, the feminist socialist Sofie (pictured) is standing with a placard, plus LOL's mate and yours Manchester University's outgoing Prezz and ongoing Trot Rob Owen.

Coming from a "good Labour family" it seems Rob has fallen in with the wrong crowd at college. He's not entirely stupid, in fact he's quite bright. And one day we may get him back.

Meanwhile Blackpool residents say: "Thank goodness that we're still not too scuzzy for the Students. Those Political Parties say they're fed up with meals in our finest restaurants out of styrofoam. They've even taken our Cazzie. They're saying we were plumb last in the assessment. Thank goodness for students!"

TRIVIA QUESTION: Is Sofie a member of any Political Party herself? Answers on a postcard of the Golden Mile please.

UPDATE: Discussion over at Dave's is especially re the War and also anti-semitism. It's quite interesting. Answer to my trivia question there also. Which fact has been kicking up a bit of a storm in some circles.

Not a bit of it. But I'm going to leave the slip there for a bit I think ...
Anyone know why Blogger hasn't gone BST?

Rob Owen is off track. His problem isn't that he's a nutty, islamist supporting trot (that's a minor issue). His biggest problem is that he's machievellian (claiming to have democratised UMSU while illicitly and covertly passing a new consitution by council/university dialogue, and using it to rig election regulations, before appointinting and supporting a completely bent returning officer, and completely failing to spend a single penny of the union election awareness funds, in order to keep turnout low, to bugger Labour, Rob's class enemy in chief). It's a one-party state in micrpcosm.

Witness ye the Alan Milburn of the future.

it is also he who is responsible for the communalist/seperatist situation with regards to interfaith relations at the union, constantly pushing centrally administered SWP motions designed to create the most gain to the SWP at the highest cost to community cohesion, a unified campaigning union and pluralism itself.

A good bloke for a chat (though he does seem to believe in the notion of SWP infallibility quite strongly). In all other respects, unadultrated badness.

As you say Tom potential Milburn material or with a bit of styling a Campbell.

SWIZO = mad as fish. No offence to fish. Has been since time. Thing is it used to be ten people in Greater Manchester and it has been allowed to multiply and multiply. Because the LP and CF and all are so very feeble in SUs.

While they (SWP) are forever and often correctly accused of hollowing out single issue organisations I think it is also the case that (a) they don't always do it deliberately but they are very determined and resilient and stubborn and (b) for a LP that wants to attract believers the Labour Party has itself been hollowed out by the NuLs.

Your description of Rob's alleged electoral infidelities could have been applied to NOLS and Broad Left peeps of past centuries. And FCS. John Somers springs to mind.

Don't forget we had Phil Woolas as Prez. And Mann. And various Marxist-LP-ish independents. Slipman and Anzani for example. Cllr Wilmott was there. Phil Jones who founded the Food and Drink Festival etc etc.

Guardian media pundit and ITV honcho Steve Hewlett (who was a Bakers' Union activist before college, right? Yes he was, right?). One of The Times bloggers. Dave Carter who is an MCC fixer, currently on remand at MDDA.

Woolas signed my life membership card in fact. Any of these could have matched Owen for machievelli tendancies.

The whole standard of politics in the SUs is IMO down the toilet. Less engagement and pitiful turn outs. When I stood for Communications (1981. I was second by 50 or so votes) THREE candidates got more than the winner this time.

And the electorate was half the size.

God, Ms Fem LP member is gorgeous! No wonder some LPYS/NOLS/LS/Mili comrades are stepping out of line.

Noy, noy, noy

Behave please. You neglected to mention that the link you provided compares our gal to Hazel Blears. Does Sofie wear leather and ride big FO motor bikes? Like Hazey Ginger Nut?

Think bike!

No more Potcard. Postcard. Enough is enough. Don't do it. It is 5Bn times stronger than the oregano sold to gullible yuppy NOLS folk in the Spinners. But about half as strong as the sputnik available to one and all in the Pepperhill.

Just before the Hulme Dibble or the Moss Side 5-0 head to LOL mansions I must confirm that both the Public Houses referred to are ancient history and that I actually have no idea of the relative strength of the bits of twig and portions of soviet satellite once upon a time sold therein.

But the assertions in the media about this 20X as strong nouveau Marijuana are not dope.
