Ethnic Cleansing?: Race Cards We Have Known

Dr Yasmin Zalzala and LOL have begun a dialogue on this post about experiences of the race card in both selections and elections.

Yasmin was usurped as Man Wit PPC by John Leech who had been her agent in 2001 as they overtook the Tories and created a platform for an unlikely but as it turned out successful challenge on Labour's Keith Bradley. Leech got to do it at least in part because some so far unnamed Lib Dem activist, officer, and possibly candidate circulated a memo suggesting that as an Iraqi Refugee Muslim Woman Yas had four attributes to prevent her electoral success.

The Lib Dems believe they have expelled her from membership in the fall out from this and she did stand as an Independent in 2005 but I believe Yasmin still believes she is in membership.

In her parliamentary elections - two Westminster, one Brussels - she had no experience of any trading on these things from opponents but Yasmin did receive reports of some stirring in local government elections.

Clearly we had some communalist action within and around the Labour Party in the case of the Ealing Southall By-election. And there was an extraordinary incident in the Bethnal Green and Bow selection when one of the women who did not make the cut tried to orchestrate a candidate strike.

I was able to report various example of Lib Dems at these tricks in Manchester:

- A Focus leaflet in Clayton which had an unusual facial hair style feature suggesting the Labour candidate's moustache was somehow related to Saddam, Zapata and/or Stalin;
(I'll dust off the archive sometime)
- A couple of Lib Dem councillors being caught referring on several occasions to a Labour candidate as "kebab boy" in reference to a former job of this graduate professional;
- A Lib Dem Equality Spokesman claiming that Lib Dems were, ahem, whiter than white over Yasmin's de-selection as PPC and in every regard, when also appearing in a communalist Urdu-language advertisement;
(Also all present and incorrect in the LOL archive)

But, enough of our examples. What are the worst examples of race card play, communalism and the like in selections and elections. From opponents or indeed your own party?

Is Yasmin on the money when she suggests "ethnic cleansing" in our politics? Or is that an expression too far?

Great Sporting Moments: Wow! Twice Thrice Wow!

Durham get Hampshire on 0-2 after two balls. With Steve Harmison's substitute Otis Gibson momentarily on a hatrick. And meanwhile Spurs get to 2-0 after just six minutes after a miserable start to the season.

UPDATE: Trevor Jesty, the third umpire, considers overturning the first umpire and giving old Creepy Crawley out which would have left Hampshire on 6-3. The R5 Sports Extra team thought Otis was out and Jesty wrong.
UPDATE II: Otis Gibson gets Peterson for his third. Though it should be four.

Fib Dems: Tempttoos Applied By LOL Art Dept

Oh I don't know. Just get up to make a cup of tea and the Art Department produce an image of how David Hennigan wishes to be seen by others (left) and how he sees himself (right).

Lib Dem Voice: Hennigan Proud to be a "Fib Dem"

He feels that being called a Fib Dem on a leaflet is a badge of honour and should be used as a morale boost.

David also claims that if they'd had "two more weeks" the Lib Dems would have won in Sedgefield. Really, he does insist that that is the case. Though it is pretty hard to come up with a by-election which was known about to 99% certainty, including the likely range of dates, so very many months in advance. A three month never mind three week by-election window.

I'm looking forward to browsing all the Sedgefield by-election leaflets. Ealing Southall ones are up. Lib Dem ones Here. What a lot of leaflets one can get printed for the permitted budget these days!

It is about time someone stuck up all the Manchester Withington 2005 leaflets at the sister site too ... any offers?

PS Incidentally the Labour leaflets in Ealing Southall DID NOT run the 12 Things You Didn't Know About Lib Dems kind of attack David is complaining of. Horses for courses I guess.

Shocking: India and China, Millions Now Thrive

Alert readers may remember that a young and beautifully woven Mao has pride of place on my bathroom wall. One day I'll post a picture of it. Believe me our hero looks plucky, pure and powerful. On the mountain. Tho' with a precautionary brolley, something that it must be said fellow seeker comrade Moses did not flaunt.

Please pay no attention to my priestly neighbour if she again runs from our house - having used the facilities - that this, and the huge Gorby (with kittens) in the kitchen, never mind the East German and Welsh Language items, makes ours a communist household. Heaven forfend! Though we are of course a nest of moderately militant atheist, humanist, internationalist, pragmatic socialists.

Dave Osler - also once thought to be a bit of a lefty, despite his rather bourgeois employment - worried recently about China's progress.

Certainly eggs have been repeatedly broken, sadly in their millions at times, during the People's Republic's omelette making. But these days things ain't all bad.

When I was just 17 I was lucky enough to go "on tour" to India, under the auspices of the British Council. Even back then things were beginning to pick up in the former colonies.

I saw a dying nine year old the size of a three year old. Which was a confirming of the expected experience for a child like me, rather than the sort of shock-horror that some of the "grown ups" with us seemed to affect. Didn't they read the papers or watch the news?

Then, strangely, I was uplifted and encouraged when I talked with a family of beggars.

The father with a monstrously mangled leg and a gaping hole where one third to one half of his face had once been. In other words maintaining singular eye contact meant a not so peripheral vision of the inside of his head. But his kids ... who were also career beggars ... were not deliberately maimed in any way. Progress 1975 style. Dad knew. Things could only get better. Their own kids are most likely begging on clever clogs blogs. Progress.

I saw a dying adult "privileged" to pass away, rather abandoned and solitary, but in a clean gutter. That was within Mother Saint Teresa's "Prem Dam" home In Calcutta. A former ICI base now dubbed "Gift of God". Mother Teresa was not in that day. Off on her travels I expect. But she had delegated to a keen crew. So that was fine.

The population of Calcutta then was 15 million. But only 9 million were "on the books". If you didn't have a lintel you were not counted. Though there was a lot of elective-for-comfort outdoor sleeping - according to our hosts anyway.

We mostly stayed with pillars of the Brit ex-Pat community. My host was in charge of Brooke Bond - Fray Bentos in India. Fresh from Daar-es-Salaam. We lived for ten days in a luxurious Penthouse on Shakespeare Street, A street which had run with random Bengali blood in partition times.

Fray Bentos incidentally were then making Corned Beef in India as well as in home town Uruguay and wherever they could blag some cows and bullocks. I'm not sure they still are doing this in India. The googling is showing Brooke Bond-Liptons being an Indian run company these days. But no sign of the current shredded-holy-cow-meat-division inc.

Anyway, in a turn of events that would surely challenge the would-be saviours of the sick bullock Shambo, "that Corned Beef ting" was going on in India back then, despite all the sacred cows and shiboleths.

The only challenge was to organise the shifts for everyone's various sabbaths and to arrange the correct slaughtering of Shambo's rellies in line with each sensibility. Then get the proceeds in the tins and to market PDQ.

But I digress. Only around 1% of the population of India then was middle and upper class and paid taxes. 32 years ago. Now the proportion is around 30%. Up 30 fold in one sense. Or down from 99 to 70% poor in another.

I'm digressing again. If China does as well in going quickly from 1% to 30% - and it probably will do, say three times quicker - then one half of a billion people there could be doing OK (and admitting it) by 2017.

More people than there are altogether in the US of A or Europe SORTED OUT from being in penury to being financially OK in 10 years to go with 300M in India in the last 30 years and likely another 300M there in the next ten years.

So do we deal with these absolute numbers? Or with proportions?

How long did it take in UK to go from 1% to 30% being financially OK? Or even having a vote? Clearly 100% being OK in 10 years would be better. But when has that happened anywhere?

I'm not approving of China's many growing pains. Still less a Maoist Communist.

But I'm just uncertain on the idea that we should respond with desperate despond to these kinds of numbers.

John Leech Watch: Doctor Yasmin to the Rescue?

There was a time when John Leech Watch was useful and interesting. Sadly that time may now be well past. The last "strand" (as linked) was started early in June. Ten weeks ago.

It has been utterly undisciplined and strayed off "topic" regularly. It is now closing on 400 posts. A world record. Hurrah! Most of them from HALF A DOZEN PEOPLE! Or less as some "are legion".

John Leech needs watching of course. He is good for nothing. Or at least for hardly anything. Miserable whining and irrelevant EDM signing he does. But having "the usual suspects" chasing their tails round and round? Pretty pointless.

Is John Leech Watch now performing the same function as the classic den of thieves for wild eyed Withington Lib Dem apologists?

These desperate hold outs are still claiming the Christie Hospital really was under threat of closure, even though John Leech MP beat off the threat just ONE WEEK after being elected?

That old people would be falling into abandoned graves at Southern Cemetary? How we laughed!

That poor Lib Dem supporting squirrels and pigeons are about to be replaced with multi-storey millionaire socialist property developers in a South Manchester park?

There is one ray of hope these last few days. Dr Yasmin Zalzala - who was the Lib Dem PPC in 1997 and 2001 (and 1999 for Europe), making good progress in closing down and overtaking the Tories - has started teasing.

Let's hope she finally spills the beans on the despicable way she was (by all accounts) treated by our perfidious Manchester Lib Dems.

BNP Pimps Protest "We're Swamped": Thin End of Wedge as Two Muslims Break BNP Monopoly

BNP Dave (Bournmouth Nationalist) is cock a hoop. Two Asian men, who broke into the natural BNP gangster monopoly on grooming and working underage girls, have been convicted.

I'm not sure how. But apparently this proves that the BNP are NOT liars and criminals. BNP Dave knows best I suppose. But how does that work?

Dear "BN" aka "BNP Dave"

Can you please tell your readers:

(1) the total number of men convicted for grooming in the last 12 months;
(2) the proportion of these that are white, black, yellow, brown, asian - but anything but muslim;
(3) the total number of men and women convicted for level 4 and 5 images in the last 12 months;
(4) the proportion of these that are white, black, yellow, brown, asian - anything but muslim;
(5) the total number of men and women convicted for producing and disseminating level 4 and 5 still images and equivalent videos in the last 12 months;
(6) the proportion of these that are white, black, yellow, brown, asian - anything but muslim;

Then recant your ridiculous story and stop waving your filthy white BNP willies at us about this.

Anecdotal evidence is ... NOT evidence.

Statistics can be misused but most of the time it would be more relevant to point out that say - and I'm completely guessing - that 300 sad men were convicted on grooming, 100 grooming towards prostitution, and 3,000 on images in the last 12 months and that 99.9% of all these were potential if not actual BNP voters, and not muslims.

Thanks.

Chris Paul

[Sorry to use real name and that. Know it is not something you fascists do.]

Picture (right) shows Robert Cottage who was recently convicted and given a desultary sentence for collecting 23 bomb making chemicals in his outhouse. As he is white he cannot now be a pimp or a child groomer and although convicted of bomb making and admitting planning assassinations BNP Rob has not ever pimped an underage girl ... or boy ... and been caught at it. Same goes for the BNP Soho nailbomber.
Meanwhile the chap at the top of the post may look barmy and damaged - he is. He may also look a bit brown, but he isn't. He's white and proud of that. He says he is not a Muslim. This means - according to the BNP - that he is not a kiddy fiddler or a man who grooms young girls for prostitution. They are all brown Muslims. At least 0.01% are. Well done mate!

Tory Mayoral Candidate: LOL are Backing Boris

Boff is serious and a slasher, ruddy Borwick is into detail except where vagueness serves better, and lightweight Warwick wants to be Chair of the Arts Council or the Design Council or the Tourist Board. Something or other. Not Mayor anyway.

Bozzer will surely have some ideas soon?

The BBC has a story that certain Labour members, uncertain New Statesman readers, and anyone game for a laugh is piling in to the Tory mayoral primary to stop Boris.

Who on earth would want to stop him? I'm Backing Boris for candidate, who could resist his bumbling? :

Back Boris for Mayor of London ... Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my campaign site.
I’m busy working on finalising my priorities for London and pulling together the talented individuals who will make up my campaign, and that includes you. If you have specific areas of interest or knowledge where you think you can help, please do get back in contact via info@backboris.com.
London is, without a doubt, the greatest city on the planet. However, I believe it can be greater still.
Looking forward to putting a smile back on the face of Londoners ... Boris

The idea that Labour might disrupt the Tory selection as Tory Boy Bloggers suggest and STOP Boris being the candidate is quite extraordinary. Even Warwick who is seeking some different job is more of a threat. And Boff would be a real threat, reminding of old Robocop in the North East. Ruddy Vicky too. Boris Johnson is just a joke entry who will embarrass the Tory Party into oblivion. This fact has won LOL's support.

The fact it is a New Statesman blog witterer and some funseekers rather than "The Labour Party" when the links are perused shows just how floppy and sloppy the TBB's are on fact checking.

Have Labour managed to select any muppets at open selections for Tory candidates up and down the country? Requiring a mere handful of voters? NO? This being so how are they going to overcome the deathwish London Tory party?

Silly Standard. Silly story. Silly TBBs. Up with "man has drink at drinks party". In the Express and the Standard btw Coleman gave evidence of Ian Blair's drunkeness in the form of the allegation that he had been witnessed drinking a glass of wine rather quickly after his speech. Wow!

This is something I did the last time I spoke after a dinner, having stayed more or less temperate up to that moment.

Hardly a dead giveaway of wreckless drunkeness in a free country. Clearly if Sir Ian Blair messes up his work through drink that's another matter. But being squiffy every now and then at a function when the Met continues to improve significantly on most critieria? Not something we'd see in Manchester. But acceptable for second class London.

P(r)oxy Smearing: Signposting London Colemanballs

Good to see Iain Dale staying arms length from some silly smears and innuendoes from the loathsome Tory neantherdal Brian Coleman. The latter has used a New Statesman blog post for a rambling - almost inebriated sounding - string of generalisations about public figures, perceived as being "lefties".

Assuming Iain Dale remains tea total this is not one of the smear he will ever need to defend on his own behalf. But imagine the outrage if it were a commentator of the left saying Boris is unfit for office as he once got sozzled, or Cameron should be hounded out of parliament as he once got high, or that Osborne can't get tax sums right since he overindulged once at conference?

Reading his blog - this Brian Coleman seems to be a nasty arsey old Tory dinosaur who is by turns censorious (of the left) and libertarian (when it comes to the right).

He will allow ALL politicians to take a drink too far at a party conference, even excusing or laughing at or egging on perhaps a rather serious sounding sexual assault by a Tory MP which if involving a predatory hetero Labour MP rather than a predatory homo Tory one would very likely involve some more naming and shaming or at least another gurt dollop of innuendo.

Meanwhile Coleman generalises on the theme of the supposed general drunkeness of three London figures from some loosely alleged third hand and third rate drunken moments or in one case a supposed "well known" medical condition.

Was this "methodist" high Tory Thatcherite actually drunk when he dribbled this nonsense out? Do the New Statesman actually pay for such a garrulous, petty and careless correspondent to vent low rent jibes and gibberish of the worst kind?

They should sack him not give him a column.

Let us not forget that while Ken clearly enjoys the odd glass of red Bozzer and Cam and Oz are stalwarts of a despicable drinking and dining club which kills fox cubs by "stoning" with empty champagne bottles, thrashes restaurants willy nilly and generally engages - to this day - in behaviour that makes a slurring Mayor, a troubled Transport guru, or even a stumbling copper seem like a complete non story.

Nasty man this Coleman. Tell us about some top Tories and some illegal drugs Brian. Or more on this predatory pederast. But forget "man gets tipsy at drinks party" as this is down there with "dog bites man".

Tories: Ready for Anything at Brighton Pride?

Iain Dale tells us once again how the Tories are the Party for Gay Rights! LOL respond firstly :

Goodness me. That old Cameron vs Brown gay rights voting record nonsense? How queer!

The people of Brighton are way too Bright to be taken in by that hogwash. As Bob says going for the pink vote in Brighton is one thing but it is not sadly balanced by the same tub thumping in Witney, Congleton and Macclesfield.

And secondly on reading more comments:

News of Newmania's move to Lewes coupled with that Town's fine record of rabid bonfire bigotry brings a smile to my face. This cannot be said for the Young Tories, or Young Farmers or Young Idiots entry in the St Columb Major Carnival Parade last evening.

Would have done well in Lewes though, and on the Tory Clause 28 Stand at Brighton Pride too.

20 drunken idiots cross dressed in hijabs clutching carpet off cuts for occasional prayer miming and "comedy" names like "Miss Poppidomistan" on lollypop signs. How we laughed!

You're right Iain, the (Tory) right in this country has been put to the sword good and proper.

Those Tory Boy Bloggers on T'Interweb: Done Up Like Kippers

Ministry of Truth has done up Dale and Dizzy like a harmless Porbeagle masquerading as a marauding Great White.

Save Our Airports: From Nice But Dim Tories

The unfashionably out of step, dare I say nice but dim Tory MP for Altrincham and Sale West Graham Brady has given vent to his ideas on high flying capitalism in The Spectator. Iain Dale thinks dear Graham's analysis is brilliant. But it isn't.

The people of Manchester own an airport business worth at least £3 Billion. Ten years ago it wasn't as far as I can recall worth £1 Billion. It provides a good harvest of jobs - directly and indirectly - and is not in the same ownership as competing regional airports.

It has invested most of its profits in capacity building towards even more profit.

It has nonetheless provided a steady stream of cash to Manchester (55%) and each of the nine other local authorities (5% each). And it has also invested heavily in the region's arts, culture, sport and good causes.

Selling the airport or its holdings is not a good idea. Selling it to John Whittaker the car-obsessed boss of out-of-town shopping developer Peel Holdings is even more of a bad idea and he is already making his bids through the papers.

Keep the airport. And get back the buses and the railways too!

Weather in Padstow = warm but somethingly overcast.

Rock Salmon: Newquay's Man Eaten Shark

Tosser and doorman Kevin Keeble claimed to have taken a picture of a Great White Shark off Newquay. He has now admitted this was a prank. He is yet to admit that the picture - taken in South Africa - was not even a Great White. Subeditors have missed the obvious headline above as sharks (Porbeagles) caught in the area last week have made it straight to the plate.

Electoral Commission: Really Must Try Harder

UKIP has beaten the Electoral Commission. I absolutely agree with Iain Dale that this is the right result. A donor presenting more than £600,000 was not on the electoral register by an administrative slip. The whole loan was to be returned in the High Court verdict which has today been overturned.

I repeat: I agree with Iain Dale. This is the right decision. If this man wants to waste his money on backing UKIP let him do it.

The Electoral Commission should start doing their job properly in other areas. For example policing the spending during the live period at elections so that parties do not get away with exceeding these - in some cases by an order of magnitude and more.

This is done in collusion between the warring parties but particularly in by-elections, in marginals and in far fetched attacks that become surprise wins for the party shifting unfeasible amounts of paper.

At Brighton conference 2005 I asked the representatives of the EC whether they carried out the most fundamental analysis of the norms of a general election budget.

How much per leaflet by quality.

How much 'phone time.

How much for temporary offices.

And so on.

Serious anomalies and patterns should then be investigated. There should be proceedings and convictions where appropriate. Guidance should evolve to cover any persistent evasions and shibboleths about what counts and what does not.

Parties should also be required to submit examples of every single print item they produce (or tardily distribute) in the course of the live period.

There should be a clamp down on fibbing. Fibs repeated after they have been identified should attract serious fines - perhaps even enough to allow all other parties to finance an extra leaflet.

And so called parliamentary reports should be tied to a few weeks either side of a particular date which should be suitably distant from known election timings e.g. Euro, LG and parliament/assembly elections.

These are paid for by the tax payer
and so should not have an ounce of party political leverage in them.

Elected reps should not be able to place paid for adverts in their party's literature.

And all individual donations above a certain proportion of someone's wealth or income should require a process of independent legal advice to prevent the exploitation of weakness and the application of duress to supporters.

From a lawyer or an accountant. Yes, this person can afford this amount; yes, their family are in agreement; yes, they understand what they are doing; and yes, it is clear whether the contribution is a gift, a loan or a combination.

More on this when the beach isn't beckoning perhaps.

Laurence Murder: No More Fascist Excuses

The Bournemouth Nationalist (no link from me) said...

A loud of lying scumbag, racist, defamatory tosh about Stephen Laurence. I have removed it. Similar is not welcome here. I'm not going to go to moderation but please no repeats. Stick it on your own blog with your full name and address for service of defamation writs, and incitement charges.

Quoting these excuses for a racist gang murder year after year does nothing for Dave's so called "party" and its so called "mainstream status" but it does speak volumes to the thugs (and bomb makers and would be assassins) in suits reputation that the BNP do enjoy.

James Cleverly commented too suggesting that limiting what you don't agree with is not free speech. That would be fair comment if that's what this was about.

I don't agree with racist killing or illegal defamation and incitement. I do not agree with shouting FIRE with impunity in a crowded place and causing panic, mayhem and even death.

If one looks properly at the rights we enjoy - whether ICHR, ECHR, Bill of Rights, putative Brit constitutions - they include rights which MUST BE BALANCED. Some are sometimes mutually exclusive. Free speech is fettered in this country and it has to be to allow quiet enjoyment, right to life, right to trade and so on. Discuss.

But please no defamation, incitement or general nastiness.

Stephen and Doreen Laurence: Free Speech?

Over at James Cleverley's Blog a couple of days ago:

At 23:09 on Friday night Anonymous said...
I have spoken to one of Stephen Lawrence's mates... far from being the church going saint made out by the family he was part of a particularly odious inner city black gang who took particular delight in beating other rival gang members to within a minute of their life.
Those who live by the sword...

I hoped that James would remove this remark from a BNP sock puppet. Or at least ridicule it and call it to account?

He has done the latter and encouraged me to use free speech to do likewise. Thing is that much as I believe in and practice free speech I understand that this right must be balanced with other rights and responsibilities.

Free speech does not extend to defamation, it does not extend to shouting "Fire" with a view to starting a panic in a crowded place, and it certainly does not extend to inciting racially-motivated or any other violence.

The comment seemed to do all three really. It defamed Stephen Laurence and his family, it uttered words to cause panic and distress, and it suggested with its last line and ellipsis that "those who live by the sword ..." should die by the sword. Condoning and indeed encouraging killing.

I believe that goes beyond reasonable free speech rights. Anti Nazi League summary of the Laurence case is here.

Boris Johnson: James Cleverly Clogs the Blogs

Councillor Iain Lindley suggested that James Cleverly had got things right on the Doreen Laurence vs Boris Johnson crisis. I'm happy to post a link to the post but I must say that neither James nor Boris is half as clever as they think they are.

Dave-id Cameron looked utterly uncomfortable uttering tart nothings on Foot and Mouth. Like he knew he was losing. Like he also knew he could be having a lot more fun doing something else.

Dave-id will never be PM. Boris will never be Mayor. George will never be Chancellor. Mark my words.

How to Refuse Gracefully: Anti-Factual

One of the Gweirdo crew has announced a new blog. It seems completely and unashamedly anti-factual and I am certainly not going to link to it.

Boris Johnson: Mayoral Application is a Shambles

Pickled Politics linked to Doreen Laurence reasonably questioning the Boris appeal to most of London's communities. But Iain Dale who will not hear a word against Boris and asks who put Doreen up to it. What a patronising so and so!

The BBC meanwhile have Diane Abbott and Dawn Butler backing Doreen up. This and this are Ken's own response to Boris' obvious lack of suitability, the latter with links including graphic proof of some of his tabloid rattling weaknesses.

Neither Doreen Laurence nor the Abbott and Butler double act have bothered to include Boris' outrageous remarks about cannibals in Papua New Guinea.

This would certainly have supported their case that Bojo is a complete and utter Bozo race-wise, highly unsuitable to greet international visitors to London, and another disaster for toff and fellow Bullingdon Alumnus Cameron in persuading anyone that the Tories are Cuddly and New.

The London paper also link to most pages of Boris' actual application form.

Which is chronic. Where is asks for a very specific account of how much time he would devote Boris writes "quite a bit".

I really do shudder to think what was on the missing page three.

Newsnight: Was Top Blogger Iain Dale Cut Again?

Or did I nod off? Think perhaps the foot in mouth outbreak finally got him.
Image hat tip: Iain's conscience Tim.

Pickled Politics: Report Economist Skim of Study

Sunny at Pickled Politics found the chart below in The Economist.

I was a little puzzled at the chart and posted this comment:

How big were these samples? (1) And were they structured in any way? (2) USA, France and Italy totally obviously would be like that. The rest of them also distributed as I’d expect.

Why are Irish roots (3) and central european Jewish roots (4) not treated? I’d guess the latter would be towards the top but wouldn’t be surprised if the Irish were huddling with the other hold-outs in the middle (5).

There was a really really LOL comment over at Dale’s where he stuck up for Catholics being allowed to be or to marry royalty. Or royals being allowed to marry Cats. Something like that anyway. The funny comment was that this move if led by Tories would help win urban Irish votes in Manchester and Liverpool. Hah hah hah. Let them try!

The Economist piece skims the surface of this three-page summary item in LSE's Centrepiece which in turn is a precis of this serious paper. Perhaps, with all this publicity there will be some comments now at the EOPP Blog where the study was tagged six weeks ago.

The answers to my questions were:

(1) Only ethnic/legacy groups with 100 or more in sample were plotted;
(2) Not found a particular sample structure yet. But there is a lot of detail in the full paper;
(3) They are, and indeed plotted (strange the journalists missed this! not);
(4) There are faith based results in the tables including Jewish but no identified plot for this group;
(5) These LOL predictions were indeed correct. The Irish are low down (un-
British) despite plotting far right (long residency). Off the chart! Exactly why Iain's Tory vote grab comment was so hilarious to me.

Labour's Fightback: Six Predictions for Six Years

Labour's Fightback is back after the sort of hiatus we used to despair at from "Reclaim Labour". Incidentally of the so-called parliamentary "Left" Jon Cruddas and John McDonnell have also been very quiet. While Michael Meacher has maintained his tempo. (Links in last post).

Owen sees his glass half empty or worse with Brown, and he makes six predictions. Here they are, with my view in italics:

Firstly, there will be a general election in the not-too-distant future.
First week in June 2009

Secondly, Labour will win the election with a similar majority as today.
Probably a bigger majority. Perhaps 90 or so.

Thirdly, David Cameron will resign as Tory leader and leave Parliament.
Quite possible I suppose. If I'm right about the majority. If Owen is right, perhaps not. He was supposed to be on a two-stop strategy after all.

Fourthly, David Davis will be his only viable replacement.
Hague will still be there and might be a more attractive option. Davis is a bit like Labour picking ... oh, I don't know who ... go on then, John McDonnell. Davis would be a change in the direction of travel, not necessarily towards electability.

Fifthly, there will not be another Labour leadership contest for at least six years. Such a contest will be bittersweet for the left: there won't be an obvious successor in whom the trade union bureaucracy and softer left have illusions in (like Brown) - but there will be fewer left MPs and the soft left will be more likely to run their own candidate (probably Cruddas - who has gone very quiet since the deputy leadership contest).
Ten years. Perhaps twelve or thirteen. There is a prospect here of something a bit Swedish occuring in the UK. Ten to thirteen years is a long time in politics. Even six years is. Some nurturing and pragmatism from the left could widen this caucus.

Oh - and sixthly - Michael Meacher's leadership ambitions will continue unabated. You think I'm joking. Seriously, I'm not.
At six years, perhaps. Any more than that, highly unlikely. But he is blogging like a good 'un unlike "bloggers' hero" Jon Cruddas.

Iain Dale's Diary: MPs Who Blog

Mr Dale's draft list of MPs who blog missed quite a few out (see comments at the link). Notably his direct line manager Dave-id Cameron who was the future once, the next leader of the Labour Party John McDonnell, the one after next Jon Cruddas who was many a Labour blogger's fave - for getting IT - but has given up, and Britains' truther in chief Michael Meacher who is pretty prolific.

If David McClean MP has one he is naturally keeping it quiet along with his expenses. But he does have a Tell David pseudo consultation site.

Marie Louise Gardens: The "Now" Picture

Between those "Before" and the "After" pictures there really ought to be a "Now" and I've had a try at capturing the same view. I had to go much farther back into the park than I expected. More tomorrow.

The park was incredibly quiet. A great place to reflect after attending yet another funeral and wake. Only saw one other in a full half an hour.

But the low footfall and unpampered overgrowth meant squirrels are both numerous and extraordinarily bold. They seem to have a strong red tinge, to their chops in particular. Are these foreign usurpers going a bit ginger? Or turning Red as Man Wit must surely do come the General Election?

And is this post just a warm up for an attempt to make Jon Henley's Squirrel Nutkins Diary in the Guardian? He did pick up LOL's £1-a-minute exclusive on the Boris phone scam jackpot line, even though no squirrels were harmed in the making of it.

Europe: North West to Lose Another MEP?

The Electoral Commission has published its recommendations (pdf download) on how to further reduce our MEPs from 78 to 72. There were 87 originally. And no dratted PR.

The Commission used the exciting Sainte-Laguë method to wild enthusiasm from psephologists and statisticians.

Major distortion is from the over-representation of Northern Ireland, forced by minimum three MEPs per region. But if one were handed back it would go to the Brummies rather than the NW. This method makes us the second most hard done by region. In other words if there were 74 rather than 72 seats we would have had one of them.

Now you don't have to look. But table A5 gives a little taste.

Libdemologists Voice: Grant Shapps At It Again

LDV's Mark Pack has scored another of his exclusives on Tory Campaigning Genius Grant Schweppes MP (above, uhurr just like that). Schweppes said Tories could hold their head up after a gain in share in Ealing Southall, which they'd "not been able to do for years". He was sadly forgetting 2005 and 2006 when this feat was achieved in Cheadle and Blaenau Gwent respectively.

But in fact I seem to recall that that Cheadle by-election was also marred by Lib Dems making quite a spectacle of themselves by complaining about the supposedly "dirty", "scandalous", "despicable", "outrageous" leaflets the Tories put out against them. These pointed out the Lib Dem candidate's broken record as the local Council leader.

Fair enough? The Lib Dems didn't think so and they complained to the media, on their own leaflets, on the doorstep and to everyone who might listen to their whining and whingeing.

But if these leaflets were so very shocking and damnable to our Lib Dem friends are they now going to apologise for using the same stories - verbatim - when they were attacking elsewhere? Yes folks! The dirty, despicable etc Tories copied every word from dirty, despicable etc Lib Dem leaflets procured from Labour friends!

The Hunter becomes the Hunted!

UPDATE: Mark Pack (comments) says there was a Tory leaflet implying their man was a rapist. I didn't know about that.

Bicycling: One of Our Bicycles is Missing 1

Dear Boris Piffle Johnson's bicycle is missing. Stolen from a Fort Knoxian mooring by an insolent scallywag. This sort of thing can happen to the best of us and the police are sanguine:

Up here in Manchester's leafy suburbs we had a reverse bike burglary when crack-addled crooks broke in, stormed upstairs shouting, stormed downstairs muttering 'wrong house', nicked some useless stuff (most of which they dropped on the way out), and traded up from a bike to a getaway car.

They left the bike in the drive. The police told us to keep it and they'd be in touch if it were claimed. We did and they haven't been. It does get used every now and then. Not bad.

Perhaps someone round the corner from you has lost their Beamer and gained a silver-grey Marin Sausalito?

Like the one this young scallywag is pushing furtively past the paps.

Libdemologists Voice: Playing Straight Off the Bat

LOL have been following Lib Dem Voice with interest on their rather queer Alan Duncan-bashing exploits. Mark Pack is clinging on like a Leech to the idea that using the word "straight" about your own candidate or the choice ahead of the voters is not automatically "homphobic" (sic). The word seems to bother him so much that his normally impeccable spelling repeatedly stumbles on it.

LOL agree absolutely with this general point, while being concerned that Mark has got a bit manic, with a rising pitch of the Captain Ahab or Don Quixote wild goose chase.

Sometimes e.g. when against a known gay opponent banging on and on about "the straight choice" or even the coded "family man" can clearly be nasty and homophobic. The rest of the time it's perhaps just a bit quaint or mildly dog whistling. Best avoided full stop in all three scenarios.

Manically collecting examples of Tory, Labour and SNP use of the word "straight", where there was no complaint or suggestion of homophobia, does not excuse the Lib Dems from any case where there is such a complaint and it is well-founded. In fact in such a case Simon Hughes has apologised to Peter Tatchell and expressed profound regret at the iffy bits of his Bermondsey campaign.

If Mark's scattergun examples could be construed as homophobia he should explain why. Googling opponents for the word "straight" in any and all literature and throwing stones is I feel protesting too much.

Houses of Parliament: Tory Bloggers Making Passes

Infamous security breacher John Hirst aka Jail House points to an excitable Independent scoop with an illegitimate Tory fundraiser getting the run of the corridors of power.

Not so long ago, before he more or less gave up blogging, Mr GuF reached out to a shoddy Times Story which Guido spun up some more. As I recall, you check by all means, the Times named and party-tagged three Labour peers while naming but not party-tagging two Tories and a cross-bench Military Toff. Which ain't really that fair.

Purely in the interests of fairness these were the cross-bench Janner-scragger Lord Bramall and the Tory Lords Bougham and Vaux (hang on, that's only one) and Jopling.

Then under the rather sexy heading "Nadine Dorries Gave Samuel Coates One" The Daily Pundit pointed at some ambitious Tory Boy Bloggers thusly:

'A number of bloggers also get passes from MPs. Iain Dale gets a pass from Keith Simpson, the Conservative front bench foreign affairs spokesman, while Samuel Coates, the deputy editor of Conservative Home, gets a pass from Nadine Dorries, the Tory MP. Jonathan Sheppard, from Tory Radio, is given a pass by Andrew Turner.'

So that's Keith Simpson Gave Iain Dale One? Or Andrew Turner Gave Jonathan Sheppard One?

Which helps explain this from Adam Boulton:

We also have to deal with the rise of the blogger. Iain Dale, Guido Fawkes et al want Lobby passes. But do they want to operate as journalists or gossip columnists? It’s up to the Serjeant at Arms whether to let them in.

While it makes Iain's terse riposte look rather disingenuous:

Can I make it clear that I do not want a lobby pass. It is true that 18 Doughty Street has applied for one, but I have made clear that it is not for me. I am not a lobby journalist and I do not wish to become one ...

... But I do already have a pass for life to the corridors of the HoP!

Tower of Power: No One Expects the Young Bell Ringers Cycling Tour

But it seems that they arrived mob handed at Rostherne Church this evening and rang their bony young asses off in their seventh tower of the day. They were earnest and mostly rather good at the campanology game according to partner who hardly had to ring at all.

This was the 34th annual venture. The above "Some Like it Hot" ensemble was in Cambridgeshire two years back. Perhaps this is a cross dressing Conservative Future at prayer, answering Maude's dreams?

Tory Meltdown: Guido Wields Double Edged Sword

Mr GuF has an exclusive, following a chat with the garralous ex-A-lister Ali Miraj. Mr Miraj (right) advanced his Conservative Home whine to Cameron and other clique-ists. They didn't like it. But he ran it anyway. And he is clearly deeply upset that while Sayeeda Warsi is lording it he is not. Plus he has sussed (doh!) that Conservative Associations in the ever diminshing field of winnables are not going to pick him. Plus GuF claims that Ali claims to have been propositioned to defect by Labour.

Let's hope Ali has sussed - along with the whole wide watching world - that Guido is not his friend; any more than either man is Dave-id's.

The Hoax: Nothing ... Until He Told a Little White Lie

I'm just guessing you know. But I think some people will be having a bit of fun with this one. Al Gore has caught one already.

Racist Sentencing: BNP Bombers Get Off Lightly

Some here to begin with. I reckon Nick Griffin himself is making comments on the thread. The Voldemort of British politics leaves a very recognizable and unpleasant rabble-rousing slime trail.

Robert Cottage (right, t'other, another blooming or booming Doctor, is David Jackson) - two and a half years - for possessing 23 explosive ingredients, bomb making manuals, BNP fliers, and cunning plans to assassinate heads of state and foment and carry out survivalist race war.

Stands to reason. Andrew Rowe, 36, a Muslim convert from west London, was found guilty in September 2005 of having instructions on firing a mortar and a secret code. A 15-year term of imprisonment was reduced on appeal to 10 years.

The longest sentence - of Asian Muslims - described at the link is 22 years. Even Andrew Rowe has got off lightly. Terrific. More nazi bombers please.

The expression in law of "favoured nations" never rang so true. LOL Story from 1 February 2007. And Septicisle Story from 13 February, re Koyairs (pictured) vs Cottage.

Meme Watching: Gordon Brown, "If not now, when?"

Gordon Brown's speech yesterday at the United Nations - full text and video link - included very welcome announcements on Darfur future and broken aid promises past. But it has attracted some present Tory Boy Blogger interest over his hat tip to an unnamed US President for lifted rhetoric. Brown suggested he lifted the words from Ronald Reagan's second inauguration speech (1985) :

I have asked the Cabinet and my staff a question, and now I put the same question to all of you: If not us, who? And if not now, when? It must be done by all of us going forward with a program aimed at reaching a balanced budget. We can then begin reducing the national debt.

In fact this rhetoric - employed by Ronnie in such a very prosaic context, though one that might appeal to the inner Chancellor in Brown - may be as old as the hills and is certainly of biblical vintage. The most regularly employed element is not a million miles away from Carpe Diem after all. And possibly coined in or around the same decade. A bit millennial. But let's not go there. There is enough to go at without that!

While Brown nodded to Ronald Reagan, an actor parroting lines from magpies and maggots, was he aware of any other coinage of this meme?

Perhaps even this March 2007 usage:

Dear Democrats: Time to Dust Off Inherent Contempt. If Not You Who? If Not Now When? (10:41 am)
It is long past time to firmly disabuse this President of the arrogant notion that he and members of his administration may operate above the law.

Let's start at the very beginning. It's a very good place to start after all. Most scholars of rhetoric suggest that the first saying like this was from the hot shot Talmudic scholar Hillel the Elder:

If I am not for myself, who will be? If I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when? (Pirkei Avot 1:14)

This was in his most active 40 years of scholarship (30BCE - 10CE). (The Roman poet Horace who seized the day was 65 BC - 8 BC.) The middle of three 40 year phases of his long and fruitful life which is also said to have included invention of the sandwich, or at least wrap or kebab, on which he has also been usurped by some Johnny come lately.

The "If not now, when?" meme has been used inter alia about forestry, and complaining about high taxes, and founding a memorial trust, and to name a holocaust survivor services e -journal, for a report of MPs re Jubilee Trust, and before all these as Se non ora, quando? as the title of Primo Levi's celebrated book of resistance (1982).

There's more. Gender based violence affecting refugees in Afghanistan, and in the US Christian call to be ready with echoes Hillel's purpose, as a Tracey Chapman song, to drive US patriotism and unity in TWAT,
as the title of Episode 256 of ER, for a blogpost justifying Bombs on Lebanon and most intriguingly for yours truly in an inspiring speech attributed to one Alice Paul.

Suffragist Alice Paul in 1921 drafted the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and it had been introduced into the US Congress in 1923. The proposed law had 3 basic sections:
Section 1- stated "that equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United State or any state on account of sex";
Section 2-stated-"the congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article";
Section 3- stated- "this amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification". (Alice Paul Institute)

Roger Catlin's TV Eye blog:

The series finale of “Commander in Chief” Wednesday had something “The West Wing” finale did not – an inspiring speech.
In a Town Hall event opposite Donald Sutherland's Nathan Templeton, Geena Davis' President Mackenzie Allen quoted activist Alice Paul in a stirring speech advocating the Equal Rights Amendment.

She liked to quote an adage she learned from her mother, a farmer: “When you put your hand to the plow, you can’t put it down until you get to the end of the row.”

And so, like Alice Paul and so many others before her who have fought for equality, tonight we take one step forward.

And know this, we will fight on and we will take one more step and then one more. Because there is too much work left to do, too much unfinished business. We will keep our hands to the plow.

Because I ask you: if not us, who? If not now, when?

That would have been around 1913 I guess.

If not now, when gets 1,670,000,000 google hits, reducing to a mere 297,000 in quotes. The Hillel attribution gets 27,500, a Reagan 23,100, Maimonides 376 (12th century), Pee Wee Herman (I kid you not) 18 ... but Alice Paul, arguably the real modern author?, gets only nine ...

Alice Paul was the architect of some of the most outstanding political achievements on behalf of women in the 20th century. Born on January 11, 1885 to Quaker parents in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, Alice Paul dedicated her life to the single cause of securing equal rights for all women.

Few individuals have had as much impact on American history as has Alice Paul. Her life symbolizes the long struggle for justice in the United States and around the world. Her vision was the ordinary notion that women and men should be equal partners in society.

When you put your hand to the plow, you can't put it down until you get to the end of the row.
-Alice Paul recalling the advice of her mother

Facebook sp?: At Least it Does Not Say Donner ... plus Jesus Wept, at frequent Dizziness

HERE. Then again I suppose a good donner could save one's life. There is some holier-than-thou banter about some of the posy pics on the blessed picture wall. Meanwhile DizzyThinks ... encounters Frequent Dizziness.

Facebook: Australia Against Accidental Apostrophe's

AAAA's is a great idea for a facebook group. Incidentally Paris (above) and Nicole did rather well in their $100 job today, brightening up the lives of residents of a senior citizen's home. They passed on the dawn hunting trip. "Cru-ell" they chorused brightly.

Iain Dale's Diary: Your Top 20 Political Blogs Please

There are two more weeks to go in Iain Dale's remarkable experiment in Blog-ocracy. Last year his guide to political blogging included a top hundred. He compiled it himself using his skill and judgement.

As Iain Dale's Diary probably has more outward and inward links across the political spectrum than any other he is in a pretty good position to do that. In fact my view is that that would likely be a far fairer process than having his readers and their readers provide lists and then melding them. Without any weighting this will produce a Tory-heavy list.

Iain wants a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 blogs ranked as you see fit. Iain at iaindale dot com, or in comments.

My list below has been compiled rather quickly. So many apologies if you're unjustly left out. There are a few extra rules I've imposed on myself. No mainstream media blogs e.g. Kevin Maguire. No blogs with minimal party politics e.g. Kerron Cross. No mass collectives e.g. ConservativeHome, Bloggers4Labour, LabourHome though I've included LibDemVoice. And finally - no more than half with the same party allegiance as the nominator, the rest non-aligned or opposition.

Labour of Love
Ministry of Truth
Recess Monkey
Luke Akehurst's Blog
Bob Piper
Rupa Huq
Dave's Part
Stephen Newton
Hamer Shawcross
Newer Labour
Ellee Seymour
DizzyThinks
Pickled Politics
Political Betting
Suz Blog
Prisoners' Voice
Guido Fawkes
The Black Triangle
Lib Dem Voice
David Lindsay
Iain Dale

If there are more than 20 there it'll have to be a case of devil take the hindmost.

Will be back to stick all the links in soon.

UPDATE: Ellee, Suz and LDV will be added to the blogroll. Parbury would have made it if it wasn't for ... all ... those ... pregnant ... pauses. Fib Dems similar ... I'm also going to catch up with the Manchester blog scene, political and otherwise, very soon. And finally finish off the redecorations to a three column format ... also soon. PS No MPs.

Paul Newman: Finally Blogs Something Normal

Islington's answer to Bamber Gascoigne has posted a thirty question, clever clogs, spin doctory quiz.

The fellow is a Tory, a very rude and garrulous Tory at that, and is insistent, despite evidence to the contrary that he, rather than the 99% of people he's not at all like, is the normal one.

But, at last, something useful.

Woodward, Newman, and a small but normal doggie.

Pickled Politics: Fun Video and Sim Sham Shame

Sunny shares a fun video and also the link to BBC coverage of the Indian Doctor in Australia who was arrested over a Sim card he once owned being "found in the burnt out vehicle" in the airport ram suicide attack. Seems like a clumsy attempt to fit him up as the Sim was found in Liverpool, out of reach of the flames that would have destroyed it.

BBC Asian Network/ICM: Attitudes to Britain

Sunny gives a glass half full appraisal to a survey of Asian attitides to Britain and Britishness. Here is a sample:

4) Generally speaking, how satisfied are you with life in UK?
Total Asians: 84% (!) … broken into: Other (73%) ; Bangladeshi (90%) ; Pakistani (86%) ; Indian (86%) ; Christian (77%) ; Sikh (90%) ; Hindu (80%) ; Muslim (88%)

The BBC he says have the old glass half empty take but at least they've taken away the ridiculous hijab picture.

More Vampire Doctor: "I Will Be a Bad Person"

“If I am wrong I will be a bad person
because I will have raised this spectre.”

Andrew Wakefield, March 3, 1998. Interview in The Independent.

Remember LOL's Vampire Doctor where Dr Wakefield preyed on children at his son's birthday party, paying each £5 to donate blood and laughing with colleagues that some fainted or puked. He also cut up rough when British hospitals, even private hospitals, wouldn't let him do lumbar punctures on kids on their premises. In the USA (above) it seems they hold rallies for you if you do these things to their kids. Truth heals.

Marie Louise Gardens: Before and After Pictures

Following among other campaigns John Leech's brilliant coup in convincing many vulnerable cancer patients that the Christie Hospital was to be closed; his team's marvellous story telling, conjuring up a picture in my mind's eye of dozens of pensioners falling into open graves; and his ongoing battle to oppose a plan for fortnightly bin collections which never actually existed; LOL are impressed that Councillor John Leech MP (right) has identified himself so very closely with the seemingly laudable effort to "Save Marie Louise Gardens".

It seems our evil Labour council are to sell this 104-year-old park off to developers for building. Though it is hidden away, hardly used and in grave need of regeneration the very idea of selling off our parks wholesale doesn't bear thinking about.

And even though W Menzies Campbell has been urging Lib Dem councils to do far worse it is good to see Honest John standing up to be counted and making sure that not a single blade of grass, not a single tree and not a single park bench is harmed.

Hurrah! John was the fourth person to sign the petition to save the park; he has tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) signed by some of the arguably 'alert' among his Lib Dem colleagues; and he has even spoken in the HoP, garnering advice from a Labour MP on how to stop these evil plans. Hurrah! And again hurrah!

Following three site visits, research into the park's history and legal status, detailed genealogical study, close inspection of the planning applications, and careful consideration of all the sight lines I have commissioned two artist's impressions which I believe accurate in most regards.

These are reproduced below as Before and After views. As ever readers may provide a list of all the differences. If anyone gets all of them there may even be a prize!

Given the differences illustrated above it is not hard to see why the local bull councillor Mark Clayton responded to the planning application with ... his approval. The fool felt at the time - when there were just a couple of objections and one supporting representation - that the very considerable investment in the park resulting was worth stomaching the above very grave difference in aspect. He has been persuaded of the folly of his ways.

The views shown are of around one sixth of these Gardens, being the North East corner. The main building is the lodge which was in effect a "Council House" sold under Tory right to buy legislation in 1998 (? one source says 1995 ?the start of the tenancy?). The North boundary wall runs around 15 metres behind the two buildings.

If you are confused by the many and various differences please do not hesitate to get in touch via comments or email.

As this is such a fascinating campaign LOL will come back to it and share detailed research findings.

South Manchester Distorter: Congratulations! or Come on Baby Light My Fire!

Many congratulations to the South Manchester Reporter (SMR) who rushed in where angels fear to tread and published an on site picture of a "millionaire" with a riches to rags story on their front cover, hitting mats on Thursday and Friday.

Having a nodding acquaintanceship with this gentleman for the last week or so and knowing exactly where he was staying - without blogging it - I admired their placing of their hot story ahead of this poor man's well-being. Journalism without fear, favour, or too much regard for facts.

On Thursday and Friday he was nowhere to be seen. And overnight Friday his temporary home was thrashed and burnt to a crisp. Onwards and upwards for our brave local newshounds! The editor's "office" may rove tirelessly between a dozen Didsbury pubs. But he and his crack team nonetheless light up our lives.

More on this great story in the next day or two. In the meantime I also noticed the marvellous balance the SMR maintained on their letters' pages in the very same edition and having just finished "artist's impressions" for my next story the LOL graphics department are now onto that one.

Ealing Southall: Virendra's Transport of Delight

This is Virendra Sharma's patent battle waggon. Dizzy Thinks has more.

Sunday Telegraph: The Drugs Story Don't Work

Mr Dale has swallowed another Sunday Telegraph mix up whole:

The piece, based on an email from a vested interest to their peers, states that there is to be a £50M cut in an aspect government spending on tackling drugs. It says ithis cut is over three years. But then it says that this is a 12% cut. Of an annual budget of just under £400M, so upwards of £1.2B in the three years.

The numbers are all over the show. For example the figure of a 12% cut is quite wrong. The real annual cut - if the absolute figures are to be believed - is hard to estimate from the insufficient data but say between 3 and 4%. The Torygraph, and their rather partisan source, effectively negotiating in the press, do not show whether this "Cut" is a:
(a) cut in an anticipated growth budget (which may still be growing);
(b) real terms cut in a somethingly growing real terms standstill budget; or
(c) cut in absolute terms; or even whether a
(d) proposed or agreed change. (At most a proposal.)

It must also be said that this is supposedly a cut - of whichever type(s) - in one particular funding stream, the Pooled Treatment Budget. Neither the partisan source nor the deteriorating journalism of the ST indicate whether other services are being grown or introduced to compensate. Many people are small c conservative and horrendously change averse. Media and oppositionists feed this but in the real world change is a reality and it can be progressive change.

The story is inaccurate and incomplete. It shows a rather typical newsdesk tendancy for innumeracy and analytical failure. And we need to know a lot more before we start calling anyone hypocritical. Dale thinks this is a Chris Grayling originated story. (Wasn't he riding shotgun on Angus McNeill's wild goose chase?) Grayling needs to work on his moves. This story is weedy. And weed you don't need ...

The above graph shows the growth of those engaged with the drugs reduction service and how this was running ahead of growth targets (report home).

2008 is the end of the first 10-year-plan.

The closing date for the latest Tackling Drugs, Changing Lives consultation is 19 October 2007.

World Athletics Trials: Jo Pavey Running Solo

The BBC claimed just now that Hayley Yelling was going to run the women's 5,000 metres at Sports City this evening. But having seen H run a useful 15:37 for the distance last night at the Longford Stadium I would have been surprised. Jo Pavey is not going to run that much faster though she hasn't had the benefit of a pace maker and a mixed field.

Hayley ran in some special 5k track races put on for those who without the standard for the world trials. All the first eight in the A race set new personal bests ... Jonny Mellor was second in 14:08 and my protege Tarus had held him to one second on the same track AND taken one of his road race records. Not here though.

At least a couple of them now do have the qualifying time! Carl Hardman from my club was 5th in 14:18.2 knocking more than half a minute off his best. Great strides too in the B race.

Very well done to Dave Norman for putting the event together. Thirty years ago it would have been a ridiculous to suggest that male endurance runners were the Cinderellas of our sport. But just now that's the case.

At these "self help" races 12 guys knocked up to 3% off their best times - the same % as 0.3 seconds in a 100m or an extra foot in the triple jump. A little investment in these and our marathoners could pay huge dividends.

Jo Pavey did pick up the pace over the last five laps and ran 15:17. Picture shows Hayley (left) and Jo when they won gold and bronze in the European Cross, 2005.
